Village of Brantome, Dordognes

Brantome in Dordogne is a charming little village. Very quiet, but has many surprises for you. The particularity of this village is in its layout. The Drone River is all around the village which makes it a small island.

Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Brantôme

Build in 769  under Charlemagne, part of the abbey was crafted on a cliff. Since 1840, it was officially classified as a historical monument.

The abbey was partially destroyed and partially rebuilt many times: during the Hundred Years War, the English transformed it into a fort and the Vikings destroyed it twice in 848 and 857 during the Viking invasions.

Le Clocher—The Bell

One of the oldest bells in France, dating from the 11th century.  Unlike many bell, the bell is built on a rock and not on the church. This style is called a Clocher Campanile .

Jardin des moines – The Monks garden

The Jardins des moines were formed during 16 century and given to the monks in 1742. During the revolution the garden became a property of the city and finally became open to the public after World War I.

Les Jardins tranquiles – The Peaceful Gardens

9 acres of garden created in 1993. A very quiet garden with many different styles: English garden, Japanese Garden, French garden and many more. Many peaceful green corners to enjoy. A unique experience.

Drone River

The advantage of Brantome is being surrounded by the Drone River.  Boat tour offers many comfortable guided tours about and literally around the village.

If you are looking for a more adventurous route, many canoes are available for rent. Groups and individuals can enjoy a pleasant outing in this calm environment.

An incredible little village where peace and quiet, through many activities, rule the atmosphere. If you happen to be in the area, I would most definitively advise you to do a quick stop to Brantome. No need to spend more than an afternoon but well worth the visit.
